Jeff Bethke

Managing Partner

Jeff has more than 20 years of higher education and not-for-profit finance and operations experience and a decade in consulting and corporate management roles. Before launching Ingenuity Advising in 2021, Jeff served as executive vice president and chief financial officer at DePaul University, one of the nation’s largest private universities, where he oversaw the institution’s finance and budgeting functions, facility operations, human resources, information technology, internal audit, public safety, student housing, dining operations, community and government relations and other operational areas.

He was the university treasurer from 2008 to 2016 and, before that, served, variously, as associate treasurer, budget director, chief of staff to the EVP, and procurement director. During his career at DePaul he led the dramatic expansion of the institution’s endowment, he directed the strong operating performance of the university (leading to five successive credit rating upgrades), he conceived of and completed several innovative real estate transactions, and, in 2020, he directed the organization’s COVID-19 crisis response efforts.

Jeff is vice chairman of the finance committee of the Niagara University Board of Trustees and he is chairman of the finance committee of the DePaul College Prep Board of Directors. In February 2021, he was elected chairman of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) Board of Directors. He also serves on the boards of Navy Pier, Inc. and Choose Chicago. He is a past vice chair of the Civic Federation of Chicago and, from 2009 to 2017, served as president of the Educational Advancement Fund, Inc., a not-for-profit real estate joint venture serving four Chicago-area universities.

Before embarking on a career in higher education Jeff served as a management consultant and worked in finance and operations management roles for the City of Chicago and the retailer, Borders Group, Inc.

He is a first-generation college graduate with an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago and bachelor’s degrees in English and history from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. In 2019, Financial Executives International named him “Financial Executive of the Year” in the national non-profit category.
